Companies Hope Super Bowl AI Commercials Score With Viewers

Some Super Bowl ads celebrate the benefits of artificial intelligence, but at least one poke fun at the concept.  One Super Bowl commercial promotes Guided Frame on pixel 8 phones, a feature that makes it easier for people with blindness or low vision to take photos. Video screenshot by Gael Fashingbauer Cooper/CNET Artificial intelligence continues to make headlines, from the FCC banning AI-faked voices in robocalls, to Paul McCartney using AI to create the final Beatles song. AI has a presence in Sunday's Super Bowl as well. It's showing up in some of the famed commercials airing during the Kansas City Chiefs-San Francisco 49ers game.  Some ads highlight how AI helps their products, others use AI to actually make their ads, and at least one is pokes fun at AI. Here's a look at the AI-related ads. And check out our roundup of all the Super Bowl ads you can watch now. Microsoft Copilot: 'Watch Me'

CrowdStrike | The Future

Microsoft's "Watch Me" commercial promotes Microsoft Copilot, the company's AI assistant found in Windows 11, and plays off the idea that AI will replace artists and creatives. In this ad, people call on AI to help them complete their movie, video game or study for a chemistry test.

Google's Pixel 8: 'Javier in Frame'
We live in a selfie- and camera phone-focused age, but you may never have thought about how those with impaired vision are able to take photos. Google features an accessibility feature called Guided Frame for its Pixel 8 smartphone, using Google AI to alert them about when and how many faces are in the frame. Blind director Adam Morse -- with an ending voiceover by blind singer-songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder -- explains the feature in his Super Bowl ad  CrowdStrike : 'The Future'Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike travels back to the Old West in an ad showcasing how it uses AI for security. When creepy Star Wars-looking robots try to attack the town, one lone woman armed with CrowdStrike's AI-powered cybersecurity shuts They down fast.

Etsy: 'Gift Mode'
Ah, it's always a good time to poke (gentle) fun at the French. In Etsy's Super Bowl ad, Americans about to receive the Statue of Liberty use Etsy's AI-powered Gift Mode to decide what to give back to their French friends. Spoiler: It's cheese.

Avocados from Mexico: 'Guac-AI-Mole' site
Avocados from Mexico has some of the funnier Super Bowl ads of past years. (In 2015, a college football draft spoof showed Australia drafting the kangaroo, the US going for wheat, and Mexico , of course, avocados.) The company won't have a Super Bowl ad this year, but its website is hyping "Guac-AI-mole," where AI generates guacamole recipes based on information submitted by users.

Body Armor: 'Field of Fake'
There's also at least one ad that uses AI sheerly to poke fun at the concept. If you've watched enough AI-assisted videos, you know that some can be unnervingly bad, with creepy voiceovers, and obviously fake creatures and humans. The Coca-Cola-owned sports drink BodyArmor tackles that aspect of AI, spouting random AI-sounding lines such as "Teammate Trust Tackle Ball" and showing a football player dunking a basketball on the gridiron. The commercial then sneers, "Artificial? No!" and proclaims that "nothing in sports should be artificial" before plugging the "real sweeteners, real flavors" of its drinks.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin hospitalized with bladder issue, transfers powers to his deputy

While initially Austin was set to retain the "functions and duties of his office," at about 5 pm Sunday he transferred those authorities to his deputy.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized again Sunday to address a bladder issue as he continues to recover from cancer and has transferred authorities to his deputy, the Pentagon said.

Austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December and continues to deal with complications from his treatment.

At about 2:20 pm Sunday, he was transported by his security detail to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center "to be seen for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue," Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement.

While Austin initially intended to retain the "functions and duties of his office," at about 5 pm Sunday he transferred those authorities to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks. As of Sunday evening, he remained hospitalized.

A statement from Walter Reed medical officials late Sunday said Austin was admitted into the critical care unit for supportive care and close monitoring. Dr. John Maddox, the trauma medical director, and Dr. Gregory Chesnut, director of the Center for Prostate Disease Research of the Murtha Cancer Center, said while it was unclear at this time how long Austin will remain hospitalized, “the current bladder issue is not expected to change his anticipated full recovery.”

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was notified, as well as the White House and Congress.

Austin was scheduled to depart Tuesday for Brussels to hold a meeting of the Ukraine contact group, which he established in 2022 to coordinate military support for Kyiv after Russia's invasion. After that, Austin was scheduled to attend a regular meeting of NATO defense ministers.

It was not immediately clear if this hospitalization would change those plans.

Austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December and underwent a procedure called a prostatectomy to treat it on Dec. 22.

Over the following week, he developed complications and on Jan. 1, in extreme pain, he was taken to Walter Reed by ambulance where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Austin remained at Walter Reed until Jan. 15. He then continued to recover and work from home, and he returned to the Pentagon Jan. 29.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin talks to producers for first time since hospitalization

His doctors have previously said his prognosis against the cancer is “excellent” and that no further treatments will be needed. Austin has gone back to Walter Reed for follow-ups since his hospitalization but this is his first unscheduled trip due to continued complications from his cancer treatments. Austin did not tell President Joe Biden, Congress or his deputy defense secretary of his December cancer diagnosis or initial hospitalization for weeks. That secrecy has become the subject of an inspector general investigation and a Pentagon internal review. He has previously said he never instructed his staff to keep his hospitalized a secret.

The Best Gadgets to Make Your Home Super Bowl Central

Invest in an automatic mixology machine or smart light strips to show your support for either 49ers or Chiefs.

When the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs squared off at the Super Bowl LVIII set for Feb.

11 at 6:30 ET, you'll be able to watch it on CBS and even Nickelodeon if you're really in demand of a kid-friendly, slime-covered Bubble Bowl, of sorts. However, if you're the type who wants to make the day as memorable as possible, you'll need food.

You'll need friends. And you'll need stuff. Unfortunately, if you're like me and you live in a small, two-bedroom apartment, the one thing you can't necessarily get more of is space. If you're trying to gauge where to watch the Super Bowl this year, look no further. If you're looking specifically for a screen, Gizmodo already has you covered. Last year, we offered readers ways to watch the game without ever having to leave the couch.

But what if you're the more active sort? What if you're the overachiever who wants to have a Super Bowl bacchanalia like you never have? Well, you'll probably drop a fair bit of dough on that endeavor, but at least it will be interesting for everyone involved. And hell, you may be able to pull it off if you don't have a kitchen island or a living room the size of Steve Jobs Theater.
